Fortress on the Volga
September 12,1942: at a meeting at the headquarters of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, the decision was made to strike at the contingent of Soviet troops in the interfluve between the Volga and the Don north of Stalingrad; this was essential to completing the capture of the city as soon as possible. In the course of the assault that ensued the next day, German troops broke through to the Volga at the junction point of the 62nd and 64th Soviet armies. By September 15, the 62nd Army was completely isolated, and the focus of the battle was on the central and southern urban areas.

Neither the Soviet offense of the 1 st Guards and 24th armies to the north-west of Stalingrad on September 18, nor the attempts of the 62nd army to mount a counter-strike could improve the outlook for the city’s defense, and the only result was days on end of bloody battles. In an attempt to put an end to the unexpectedly protracted struggle as soon as possible, the command of the German 6. Armee decided to launch a new assault on September 27,1942.

A no less fierce confrontation ensued between the Soviet 8th and 16th Air Armies and units of the German VIII. Fliegerkorps. Despite tremendous difficulties, VVS RKKA did their best to contest the Luftwaffe in the air, deliver a series of targeted strikes against ground forces and enemy communications. Each side suffered tangible losses, and more and more new reserves were moved to this sector of the front. Thus, by September 24, l./JG 3 and l./JG 52 were transferred to the Pitomnik airfield to replenish the diminishing Gruppen.

01. On the Perimeters of Europe
Beneath the wing of a transport plane, the last rays of the setting sun fell upon the lazy expanse of the endless, burnt steppe, mercilessly erasing all pleasant memories of my leave with its harsh appearance. The weather was quickly taking a change for the worse, and the plane began to shake ominously, which, judging by the looks on their faces, was making the others feel queasy. As we drew nearer to the front, with each kilometer my own mood was also undergoing a change for the worse. And neither the impending reunion with my comrades, nor the new Leutnant epaulets were able to alleviate the waves of melancholy and apathy that washed over me.

My final destination of the route was the Pitomnik airfield west of Stalingrad, a city whose name had only recently began landing on the front pages of German newspapers. That being said, initially optimistic, enthusiastic in their tone, before long, these articles took on a more moderate cadence. The pages were filled with descriptions of heavy fighting, along with the futile, yet fierce resistance of the Russians. In my experience, this did not bode well. Despite a series of defeats, the Red Army was still capable of unpleasant surprises, demonstrating this with a sudden counteroffensive near Moscow that brought the Army Group Center to the brink of disaster. The inglorious end of 1941 was seared in our memories, and the impending winter gave rise to well-founded fears.

Just yesterday, my Gruppe had been redeployed to Stalingrad from the central sector of the front, and now I was catching up with it after my leave. The Junkers transport plane was supposed to take us to Tuzov. Then I and another freshly-minted Leutnant sent to our unit had to pick up new Messerschmitts at this airfield and make it to Pitomnik by morning. Having only just finished flight school, this son of some noble family was facing his first stint at the front, and the thought of the first joint flight with him really put me on edge. Nevertheless, this young man who oozes arrogance still looked at my combat decorations and wound stripes with some respect, which inspired a faltering hope in me that he would conduct himself well enough in the air.
